Recreational Pilot Certificate

Introductory Flights

Take an intro flight to see if flying is for you!

You will learn the basics of how to do a pre-flight inspection, how the flight controls work, and how to perform the basic flight maneuvers.

YOU will take the controls on this 30 min. flight and fly the airplane under the careful supervision of the flight instructor.

Total cost varies depending on the airplane used.  $30 for the Instructor plus the cost of the airplane.  (Approximately $85 total using the Piper Warrior in Crookston, MN)

Recreational Pilot

A good option for those who only want to fly locally and only need the basic pilot priviledges.  Recreational Pilots are limited to airplanes of 180HP or less, and can only carry one passenger at a time.  Flying is daytime only, and at non-towered airports, but additional priviledges can be added with additional training.  Costs vary greatly depending on aircraft used for training, but it is much less expensive than the private pilot certificate.

  • Stage I - Learning to safely and competently operate the airplane.  At the end of this stage you will "solo"  or fly the plane by yourself.
  • Stage II - Learning advanced maneuvers - Short field takeoffs and landings
  • Stage III - Preparing for the Recreational Pilot Checkride

The FAA requires a total of 30 hrs of flight time before taking the final checkride.  The average person, however, needs a little more experience.

FAR 61  Recreational Pilot

I. For Single Engine Airplane:

Total Time: 30 hours which consists of at least-

A. Dual: 15 hours of flight training with an instructor on the Recreational Pilot areas of operation, that includes:

2 hours of en route flight training to another airport in the class of aircraft; and

3 hours of flight training in the class of aircraft within the preceding 60 days prior to the practical test

B. Solo: 3 hours of solo flying in the class of aircraft on the Recreational Pilot areas of operation.

You will also need to:

  • Take a simple medical exam
  • Take a computerized knowledge test
  • Take a practical test with a local examiner.
  • While these may seem intimidating now, through study and practice, these should be no problem for most people.
